The 19th century in Italy - and indeed across Europe - marked the golden age of operatic paraphrases and transcriptions. This flourishing tradition stemmed from a cultural desire (which soon became established practice) to recreate the dramatic atmospheres of opera - the dominant art form of the time - within the intimate setting of private salons. Even the grandest noble residences, though some had maintained private orchestras during the previous century, could not fully reproduce operatic productions domestically.

Michele Mangani offers us four masterful transcriptions from Puccini's most beloved operas: La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Each paraphrase artfully weaves together the most significant and recognizable themes from these operas, performed on this recording by Corrado Giuffredi on clarinet and Federico Nicoletta on piano.

Johannes Brahms’s two Sonatas Op. 120 for piano and clarinet—the wondrous blooms of his final creative spring, unexpected even to the composer himself—are here recorded with Corrado Giuffredi on a CD included with the monthly magazine Amadeus. This issue also features interviews with both performers and a comprehensive listening guide.

In duo with Corrado Giuffredi, he has recorded a Verdi program for the Italian-Swiss Television at the Teatro di Busseto, a series of duets broadcast on Rai5, a CD of paraphrases on Puccini’s operas, and the two Brahms sonatas for Amadeus magazine.
